And, how is a distillate made differently from other THC and cannabis products? This guide covers the distillation process from lab certification and testing to extraction, filtering, and packaging.
What Is Distillation?
The formal definition of cannabis distillation is the process of extracting and refining the active components of marijuana, originating from the hemp plant. The resulting product, cannabis distillate, is a potent cannabis extract that has been systematically stripped of all materials and compounds except one specific cannabinoid, commonly THC or CBD.
The cannabis distillate production technique combines both science and art to create a cannabis concentrate at a pure molecular level that is essentially tasteless, odorless, and nearly 99% pure THC concentrate with tremendous medicinal properties.
How Is Cannabis Distillate Made?
The science behind distillation is well-established and produces an ultra-pure and potent form of THC. 1. LAB CERTIFICATION & TESTING
In RedBud Extracts’ state-of-the-art laboratory, cannabis distillate starts with the cannabis flower or bud, and lots of it! The particular strain of the flower doesn’t typically impact the end product in a meaningful way, as all plant matter and biomass will be stripped out, resulting in a pure THC concentrate.
RedBud Extracts locally sources cannabis flower from Oklahoma-based cannabis farmers. The flower is rigorously tested for contaminants, heavy metals, pesticides, and harmful chemical residues as well as tested for THC potency by an independent third-party lab. The flower is shredded and ground up for further processing.
2. DECARBOXYLATION
In order to achieve the necessary medicinal properties, the cannabis flower must be decarboxylated for the THC acid to interact with the human body effectively. This process raises the marijuana’s temperature to activate the cannabinoids and remove the carboxylic acid from the cannabinoid chemical compound. Once this is done, the THC can effectively bind to the body’s receptors to provide medicinal benefits.
3. CO2 EXTRACTION

4. WINTERIZATION & COLD-FILTERING
Cannabis distillation utilizes heating and cooling processes to separate and remove fats from the weed oil. The cannabis concentrate goes through a pre-winterization and winterization process, cooling and warming the concentrate, to purify the extract of waxes, fats, and other undesirable compounds. The cold-filtering process creates a clean, solvent-free, concentrated liquid.

5. DISTILLATION
The final steps in the cannabis distillate process use heat, pressure, and evaporation to separate any remaining plant matter and high-burning terpenes from cannabinoids (THC and/or CBD). Once this final process is accomplished, the end product is at its maximum potency.
6. TERPENES
