Whether you are new to marijuana or simply curious about marijuana terms and vocabulary, you may encounter unfamiliar terms as the cannabis market continues to evolve. In this alphabetical marijuana glossary, you can find the definition of popular cannabis-related terms that are often referenced in cannabis culture. Learning these terms may help you better understand cannabis products and the consumption methods of marijuana.

Badder – Badder, also called batter, is a cannabis concentrate named for its malleable consistency that resembles frosting or a thick cake batter.

Budtender – Cannabis dispensary workers who may be able to answer your questions on strains, cannabis products, and make suggestions based on patient needs and wants.

Cannabidiol – Referred to as CBD, it is a non-psychoactive derivitive of cannabis and is legal recreationally in 46 states and therapeutically legal in all 50 states. It is the second most prevalent cannabinoid in cannabis, after tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Cannabis – A tall plant with a stiff upright stem, divided serrated leaves, and glandular hairs. It is used to produce hemp fiber and as a psychoactive drug (THC), often used for medicinal or recreational purposes.

Cannabis Dispensary – Medical and recreational cannabis dispensaries give people a secure location to purchase cannabis products. Laws regarding access vary by state.

Cannabis Extract – A cannabis extract is a concentrate produced with the use of heat and a solvent to isolate certain cannabinoids such as THC or CBD. “Extract” and “Concentrate” are sometimes incorrectly used interchangeably.

Cannabis Flower – The psychoactive dried resinous flower buds and leaves of the female hemp or cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa or C. indica) that contain high levels of THC and are consumed for their intoxicating effect.

Cannabis Leaf – The leaf of the cannabis plant. Often used as a symbol for the THC.

Cannabis Oil Pen – A handheld device consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge or pod filled with cannabis oil concentrate. With a pen, concentrates are heated, not burned.

Cannabis Oil Vape Pen – A vape cart is a glass cartridge pre-filled with cannabis oil. This oil contains various combinations of cannabinoids and terpenes extracted from cannabis.

Cannabis Pen – A pen-like handheld device consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge filled with a cannabis concentrate. Cannabis pens heat the concentrates to the point of vaporization, not combustion. Instead of smoke, the output is vapor.

Cannabis Vape Juice – Cannabis vape juice is an extract, distillate, oil, or honey produced from the dried cannabis flower and leaves. It typically contains isolated cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, or a combination of both.

Cannabis Vape Pen – A handheld device resembling a pen consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge with a cannabis concentrate, usually containing THC, CBD, or both.

Cartridge – Similar to pods, cartridges are devices for delivering cannabis oil or concentrate to a vaporizer. Cartridges tend to be smaller than pods and are screw-in versus magnetic.

Cart Pen – Cart pens are handheld devices consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge filled with a cannabis concentrate. With a cart pen, concentrates are heated, not burned.

Concentrate – Concentrates, or extracts, are significantly more potent than a standard cannabis bud or flower. Processed to keep only the most desirable cannabinoid compounds while removing plant material. Concentrates are often developed for medical applications.

Dabbing – Is the flash vaporization and inhalation of concentrates. THC and CBD dabbing are noted for their quick therapeutic effects.

Dab Pen Juice – Common term for a cannabis concentrate product. Dabs are tiny little concentrates of THC, instead of your more traditional dry herb.

Dabs – Dabs are concentrated doses of cannabis that are made by extracting THC, CBD, or both. The oils are sometimes referred to as wax.

Dab Vaporizer – A dab pen is something that is used purely for the consumption of dabs. Dabs are tiny little concentrates of THC.

Decarboxylation – The process of applying heat to activate and release the CBD and/or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in cannabis for a more pure and potent substance.

Distillate – Production technique for distilling cannabinoids to create a concentrate from the cannabis flower. Cannabis distillate is a pure, potent cannabinoid commonly used in edibles or through vaporizing.

Edible – Food, candy, or beverages products infused with cannabis or purified THC or CBD, depending on the intended purpose of the product. Edibles take longer to feel the effects of the compounds.

Electronic smoking device (vaporizer or e-cigarette) – A vaporizing device with a rechargeable battery that heats material such as cannabis flower (bud) or liquids containing THC to produce vapor for inhalation.

Extraction – The different processes by which cannabinoids within the plant can be extracted for use. These processes include CO2 extraction, alcohol extraction, butane hash oil extraction, etc.

Flower / Smokable – The smokable portion of the female cannabis plant containing THC for recreational and therapeutic purposes.

Honey – Non-technical term for hash oil. Noted for its amber, honey-like color, and consistency of honey.

Honey Oil – Honey oil is a nickname for hash oil, a potent cannabis concentrate. The name comes from its amber color and honey-like consistency.

Marijuana – The psychoactive dried resinous flower buds and leaves of the female hemp or cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa or C. indica) that contain high levels of THC and are smoked, vaped, or ingested (as in baked goods) especially for their intoxicating effect.

Marijuana Flower – A general term that refers to the smokable, trichome-covered part of a female cannabis plant. Flower can be consumed dry or turned into extract, wax, distillate, or oil.

Marijuana Oil Pen – Vape pens, marijuana pens, and weed pens are all terms for a type of vaporizer designed specifically to vaporize cannabis flower, distillates, and oils. The cannabis product is heated to the point of vaporization and not combustion.

Marijuana Vaporizer – A device that uses a heating element to bring either flower or concentrate cannabis to the vaporization point.

Oil Vaporizer – A handheld device consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge or pod that uses a heating element to bring some form of cannabis oil to the vaporization point, as opposed to the point of combustion.

Oil Vape Pen – Similar to an e-cigarette, an oil vape pen uses a battery to heat an oil concentrate of either THC or CBD to a vaporization point.

Pen Carts – Pen carts are handheld devices consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge filled with a cannabis concentrate. With a pen, concentrates are heated, not burned.

Pods – Discreet device for delivering cannabis concentrate through vaporization. Brands offering proprietary pod designs and batteries provide consistent quality.

Portable Weed Vaporizer – A small handheld device consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge or pod that uses a heating element to bring some form of cannabis oil to the vaporization point, as opposed to the point of combustion.

Shatter – Cooled and dried cannabis concentrate, shatter is often translucent and exhibits brittle characteristics. It is primarily used for dabbing.

Tetrahydrocannabinol – Referred to as THC, it is a crystalline compound that is the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis

Terpene – The aromatic and flavorful component of the essential oils contained in plants. More than 100 terpenes have been identified in the cannabis plant.

THC Oil Pen – A handheld device consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge or pod filled with THC oil concentrate. With a pen, concentrates are heated, not burned.

THC Pen – A handheld device consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge or pod filled with THC concentrate, usually in the form of distillate or wax. With a pen, concentrates are heated, not burned.

THC Vape Cartridge – A pen-like handheld device consisting of a battery attached to a cartridge that uses a heating element to bring some form of cannabis—whether flower or concentrate—to the vaporization point, as opposed to the point of combustion.

THC Wax – Refers to a potent cannabis concentrate that has been agitated during the extraction process, causing the oil to crystallize and solidify. This cannabis concentrate has an opaque appearance and a thick, malleable, and wax-like consistency.

Tincture – A tincture is a liquid cannabis extract that is often dosed with a dropper. Tinctures can be flavored and are usually placed under the tongue, where they are absorbed quickly. Effects can be felt within minutes.

Topicals – Cannabis products made from concentrate and added to a product, such as a lotion or a cream that’s applied to the skin. The medicinal properties are absorbed through the skin and can be used to treat muscle aches, long-term soreness, or ailments like dry skin.

Vape – Common or slang term for an electronic smoking device. A vaporizer heats flowers or oils that activate cannabinoids and turns them into a vapor that can be inhaled.

Vaping – The physical act of consuming cannabis vapor by inhalation. Cannabis vapor, rather than smoke, is inhaled. Cannabis concentrate is heated in a vaporizing device (vaporizer) to a temperature below the point of combustion to produce vapor.

Vape Oil – The cannabis-derived oil product used in a vape pen or vape pod. The oil can contain CBD, THC, or a combination of both substances.

Vape Pen – Battery-operated rechargeable device for heating cannabis concentrate for consumption.

Vape Pod – A handheld device consisting of a battery attached to a pod. The pod reservoir holds a cannabis extract. Heating coils in the pod heat the cannabis to the point of vaporization. With a vape pod, cannabis concentrates are heated, not burned.

Wax – Cooled and dried form of cannabis concentrate, noted for opaque color and coconut oil-like qualities.

Wax Carts – A wax cart, aka wax cartridge, is any small pod or cartridge that is filled with cannabis wax and/or cannabinoids that is used to heat the product to the point of vaporization for consumption.

Wax Vape Pen – Vape pens, marijuana pens, and weed pens are all terms for a type of handheld vaporizer designed specifically to vaporize cannabis wax, distillates, and/or oils. The cannabis product is heated to the point of vaporization and not combustion.

Weed Vape Pod – A handheld device consisting of a battery attached to pod filled with cannabis concentrate that uses heating coils in the pod to heat the product to the point of vaporization. With a vape pod, concentrates are heated, not burned.

Weed Flower – Refers to the smokeable, trichome-enriched part of a cannabis plant. Flower is the most popular form used for cannabis consumption.

Weed Oil – An oil product derived from cannabis flower that is processed into a concentrated form and used in a wide variety of ways.

510 thread cartridge – A type of threaded connection used to join parts, “510” refers to 10 threads at 5mm. This connection is very common among most e-cigs and vape pens, making it easier to use various cartridges and pens together.
